Goodbye to a Gentle Giant

It was with sadness that I heard the news last week that Duke, one of the oldest tuskers in Kruger Park, had passed away. It appears that he died from old age, his age estimated at about 55 years. He was a gentle soul who was popular amongst visitors and had an avid worldwide following, and we are often asked “How is Duke doing, have you seen him recently?” by  [ Read More ]

I was privileged to be at a meeting of our herpetological association where professor Graham Alexander was speaking on his research into puff adders and pythons. His research, undertaken over the last two years in the Kwalata game reserve near Pretoria, South Africa is reaching an end. Some of the findings coming out of his research are really interesting. He was studying puff adders and pythons, as there have not  [ Read More ]

This picture was taken in Kruger at sunset. The giraffe was in the perfect position to make for an awesome sunset silhouette. To get great shots like this, book a photographic safari with WildFrontier Safaris.

We came across this lioness between Tshokwane and Satara in Kruger Park. She was on her own and was calling softly and continuously. We surmised that she had cubs in the area, although we did not get to see them. When he went behind a bush, we quickly and quietly moved behind a small shrub to hide our presence. The rhino came within 40 metres of our  [ Read More ]

We searched for this cheetah high and low, as we knew it was in the area. Our slow driving, combined with some excellent spotting (looking into the bush for the animal), rewarded us with a superb sighting! We spotted him near Mlondozi in the Kruger Park. Our guests from the UK, one an avid photographer, were blown away by this sighting. The early morning sun also made for good lighting  [ Read More ]

This lioness was stalking an impala ram. Her focus, determination and patience was amazing. Even with all her skills, the impala evaded capture by escaping into some thick bush.

We found this water monitor basking on the rocks in a brief moment of sunshine on a cool, cloudy day on safari in Kruger Park.

Where did he come from?

I came across this little guy walking across our garden. He is a Marsh Terrapin. They do not have a hinge on the underside of the shell unlike most other terrapins in our area. I will have to go scouting around to see if there is a marshy area or a body of water where he may have come from. There could be more of his species around there and  [ Read More ]
